About the Candidate

Kate Hudson is Respect Party candidate for the Manchester Central by-election on 15 November 2012. She joined Respect in March 2012, two days after the party’s victory in the Bradford West by-election.

She is a leading anti-nuclear and anti-war campaigner nationally and internationally. She has been General Secretary of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament since September 2010. Prior to that she was Chair of the campaign from 2003 and she has been a national officer of the Stop the War Coalition since 2002. She is also author of CND Now More than Ever: The Story of a Peace Movement.

Professionally, Kate trained as a historian, being awarded a PhD by the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University of London. She was Head of the Department of Social and Policy Studies at London South Bank University from 2000 to 2010. She is now a Visiting Research Fellow at the University. She is the author of a number of books, most recently The New European Left: a socialism for the 21st century? published by Palgrave Macmillan in July 2012.
